Partey's Ghana edged out by Portugal in opener

Thomas Partey in action for Ghana against Portugal

Thomas Partey couldn't prevent Ghana slipping to an opening-game defeat at the World Cup as they were beaten 3-2 by Portugal.

Our midfielder made his World Cup debut at Stadium 974, and he played the full game on what was his 41st appearance for his country.

Things started slowly with a quiet first half ending goalless, but burst into life after the hour mark when Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot to score in his fifth World Cup finals, but Andre Ayew equalised just eight minutes later.

Two quickfire strikes from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao looked to have sealed the win for the Portuguese however a late goal from Osman Bukari ensured a grandstand finish, but unfortunately for Thomas, Ghana couldn't quite find the goal they needed to earn themselves a share of the spoils.

They will now face South Korea next on Monday, November 28, who drew 0-0 with Uruguay in their opening game, with Partey going up against the Uruguayans on Friday, December 2 in the final group game.
