Gabriel

Gabriel Headshot

Tough-tackling defender Gabriel continued to impress during his third season in north London, immediately forming an effective partnership with the newly installed William Saliba and once again displaying his combination of grit and composure to great effect. He missed just one game in all competitions, started all 38 Premier League games, and weighed in with three more goals to take his club tally into double figures. His strikes included a late-winner at home to Fulham and the only goal of the game away to Chelsea.

An imposing left-footed centre back, he joined from French club Lille in September 2020, scoring on his debut and immediately establishing himself at the heart of the Gunners’ defence, winning the Arsenal.com Player of the Month award in each of his first three months at the club.

‘Big Gabi’ (full name Gabriel dos Santos Magalhaes) started his career with Avai in Santa Catarina, Brazil, before joining Lille, and he also had loan spells with Troyes and Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, where he won a league and cup double in 2017/18.

He played for Brazil at the 2017 South American U20 Championships, and was called up to the Under-23 squad at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but withdrew through injury.
