Ukraine international captain Oleksandr (known around the club as Alex) transferred his leadership skills to the Arsenal defence to great effect last season, establishing himself in a left back role that also pushed him into a midfield position when the Gunners were in possession. He netted his first ever Premier League goal in our win over Aston Villa in February (voted Arsenal.com Goal of the Month) and won back-to-back Arsenal Player of the Month awards in January and February 2023.

His versatility is well known to Mikel Arteta, who had coached Alex at his previous club Manchester City and was instrumental in bringing the defender to north London in 2022. Tireless in his running, tactically astute and superb technically, the childhood Arsenal fan enjoyed huge success in Manchester, winning four Premier League titles, four League Cups and one FA Cup. He made more than 100 appearances for the club, including the 2021 Champions League final.

He became Ukraineโ€™s youngest goalscorer at the age of 19 and their youngest captain, aged 24, against France in March 2021. He was also named Ukraine Footballer of the Year in 2019 and has represented his country at two European Championships.
