Cultured French defender William made his long-awaited Arsenal debut last season after initially signing for the club in July 2019 โ€“ and it was worth the wait. The stylish, pacy centre back impressed from the start and was a key component in a defence that conceded just 11 goals in 14 Premier League games before the World Cup, where he was a member of the France squad that reached the final.

William netted his first Arsenal goal at AFC Bournemouth in just his third appearance, his sumptuous curling effort scooping our Goal of the Month award for August.

He made his breakthrough at Saint-Etienne, where he remained on loan after signing for the Gunners and reached the French Cup final before spending half of 2020/21 at OGC Nice. He then joined Marseille the following season and helped the club to second place during a stellar campaign in which he was named the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year, earned a spot in the leagueโ€™s Team of the Year and made his senior international debut. Perhaps his standout moment, however, was his stunning recovery and last-gasp tackle to deny PSGโ€™s Kylian Mbappe a clear goalscoring opportunity โ€“ a viral sensation that showcased his pace and precision.

The 6ft 4in defender signed a new long term contract with the Gunners at the start of this season.
