Eduardo Vargas latched onto Alexis’ ball to give Chile an early lead, and Leonardo Valencia doubled La Roja’s lead after just 18 minutes.
Bogdan Stancu then pulled one back on the half-four mark before Gary Medel received a straight red card for dangerous play.
Chile held out for as long as they could, but Nicolae Stanciu and Mihail Baluta struck in the second half to secure a shock win in Romania’s second city.
