Nuno Tavares’ first ever goal for the club set us on the way to a hugely important win over Manchester United, but the full back admits it wasn’t until we went 3-1 up that the job was done.
The game was just 134 seconds old when Tavares tucked in at the far post – and the afternoon was incident packed from that moment on.
Tavares himself was involved throughout, and was penalised in the box for handball which led to United’s spot kick in the second half.
But his compatriot Bruno Fernandes missed the penalty, and the chance to bring the scores level, leaving it to Granit Xhaka to seal the points with a cracker from 25 yards.
After the game Tavares was all smiles as he spoke to Arsenal Media.
“We won and I got my first goal. It was amazing,” he beamed.
“We started very hard, we wanted to put pressure on United and we got it. Now we are closer to achieve our objective. It’s the most important. Now we have five finals to go.”
Tavares added there was a sense of relief when Xhaka made it 3-1 in the 70th minute, having been under pressure for long spells.
“It was like ‘we can breathe’. We were closer to winning the game, and we did it.”
