USA select Turner for World Cup

Matt Turner celebrates for the USA

Matt Turner has been included in the USA squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The shot-stopper is now in line to potentially face a number of his clubmates at the tournament, with the USA facing England on Friday, November 25 in what will be their second game of the group stage.

Gregg Berhalter’s team will open the tournament against Wales on Monday, November 21, while they’ll face Iran in their final group game.

Matt will do battle with fellow keepers Ethan Horvath and Sean Johnson for the starting spot, having started 19 of their previous 27 internationals and winning the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the process, where he won the Golden Glove award.

The call-up for Qatar is the latest milestone in a rapid rise for Matt, who only won his first cap in January 2021 after starring for New England Revolution in MLS, and has kept 14 clean sheets in his 20 appearances.

He is one of six of Premier League players in the American squad, including Christian Pulisic, Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams, as well as two players from the Championship in fellow keeper Horvath and Josh Sargent.
