Steve Bould was full of praise for Zak Swanson after he delivered a mature performance against Leroy Sane on Friday.
Our defender was tasked with defending against the Germany international for the majority of the evening, and coped well with the challenge.
We spoke to our head coach at full-time and this is what he said:
on the performance…
The performance wasn’t great. We did produce a lot of chances but all of them were on counter, mainly. We didn’t have much stable possession of the football and we found it tough and I think in the end, in the second half, we looked leggy and a bit tired. It wasn’t easy for the lads to be fair because we had to manage minutes with four first team players so we had to change the team around for that reason.
on Zech Medley’s first half…
He did fine up there. He tried his hardest, he did everything that was asked of him. It’s obviously not his best position, but he gave it a go and that’s all we can ask.
on Zak Swanson matching up with Leroy Sane…
I thought Zak was our best player tonight. It was a great test for him, even though Sane isn’t going to be playing at his best as it was one of his first games back. Zak was very impressive and he has been all season in all fairness. I think he’s been one of our top two players for the whole of the season.
on the PL International Cup quarter-final…
It’s great to have it so soon. I don’t know how we’ll recover as of yet but these kids will be learning all of that when they go out and play league football that there’s no rest and it’s just play games and recover, so it’s mirroring that.
