Reiss signs new contract ahead of Hoffenheim loan

Reiss Nelson

Reiss Nelson has signed a new long-term contract with us ahead of a season-long loan move to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

A product of our Hale End Academy, Reiss has made 16 first-team appearances. The 18-year-old forward was named Premier League 2 Player of the Year last season after impressing for our under-23s. He is an England youth international having played up to under-19 level.

Head coach Unai Emery said: “Reiss is a talented young player and we’re pleased that he has signed a new contract with us. This move to Hoffenheim will give him the chance to get regular high-level competition in the Bundesliga and is an important step in his development.”

We would like to wish Reiss well for his loan in Germany and we look forward to his continued development with us.

The loan is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.

‘I’ve loved this club ever since I was young'

Reiss Nelson could not be happier to have signed a new long-term deal with us.

The England youth international joined us when he was just nine years old and, after rising through our academy ranks, made his first-team debut in last season’s Community Shield win over Chelsea.

Nelson has since made 15 more senior appearances for us, and he is thrilled to have extended his stay in north London.

“I’m delighted,” he told Arsenal Player. “It’s been a long time coming now, so I’m just happy everything’s sorted out and I can sign a contract for a great club.

“It’s my boyhood club. From a young age, from about eight years old, I’ve been supporting the club. The likes of Thierry Henry have encouraged me as well, so ever since then I’ve just loved the club and really fallen in love with it.”

Nelson will now spend the remainder of the 2018/19 season on loan with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, where he will be reunited with good friend and Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who has only had positive things to say about Germany’s top tier.

“He said that it’s very rough and very competitive, but he says that I’ll enjoy it,” Nelson said. “He said to just play my game and I’ll be fine.

“I’m very excited. They’ve got a great manager out there as well, so I just can’t wait to get on the pitch and do what I can do, and show everyone what I can do.”

Emery - This is a very big chance for Nelson

Reiss Nelson

Reiss Nelson took a big step in his career on Friday, when he joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on a season-long loan.

The Hale End graduate made his first-team debut last season and, after signing a new long-term deal, moves to south-west Germany in search of regular senior football.

“It’s a very big chance for him and the level there is important,” he said. “We think, because he is very young, he needs to take a new level to play, a new level also to get minutes, to get experience.

“It’s for that reason we were speaking at the club with the coaches about this possibility and also, with him, we decided together: club, coaches and the player.

“It’s a good chance for him to get minutes in and play, and then come back with us because he signed a new contract with us.”
