Despite the final whistle blowing minutes before he took the Emirates Stadium microphone to address our supporters, Martin Odegaard admitted he can’t wait for pre-season to begin and start another push towards silverware.
The skipper played his part in our 2-1 win against Everton that saw us finish the season on a high with a sixth-straight win, although Manchester City still found the victory they required to be champions.
But even though he couldn’t hide his sadness that we came two points short of a first league title for 20 years, Martin feels huge strides have once again been made this term and is itching to get back to the Sobha Realty Training Centre after a well-deserved break, and try and take the final step toward success.
Speaking to the Gooners in attendance post-match, he said: “I think we’re all a little bit disappointed at the moment to be honest, we’ve all been fighting for so long for the big dream. We were so close, but at the same time I am so proud of the boys and everyone at the club, as well as the fans.
“I’m so proud of the progress we’re making from when I first came here all the way to today, it’s such a big difference. We’ve changed the club and I think you all believe in us now. To be honest I can’t wait to come back after the break and make you guys even more happy, that’s the goal.
“We’re on a good wave, we’re closer than last year but now we have to use the break and come back even stronger and even more hungry, and push to win everything.”
In his final message to our supporters before he heads off for a break after a long, hard but ultimately memorable season, the captain added: “Honestly guys, I can’t thank you enough for everything you do for us. The support we have at away games, it feels like we’re playing at home, and home games are just a different level.
“We can’t thank you enough and we love you so much, so thank you.”
