Wenger - Wigan played a remarkable final

Arsene Wenger admits he does not know what effect Wigan Athletic’s “remarkable” FA Cup victory will have on them.

Roberto Martinez’s side pulled off a major surprise by beating Manchester City on Saturday with a performance of real quality.

Wenger was impressed by their display ahead of Tuesday night’s match against his side at Emirates Stadium.

“They had a contrasting week because they were on a low against Swansea when they lost at home, a game that was a massive game for them,” he said.

"You could see on Saturday that they have quality and played a remarkable game against Manchester City"

“But you could see on Saturday that they have quality and played a remarkable game against Manchester City.

“What kind of team will we face? We don't know. We know just one thing - we want to be at our best in a game of that importance.

“It doesn't worry me especially because I know [Wigan] have quality. Having said that, it is a surprise that they are in the position that they are in the league.

“They produced a remarkable game on Saturday and played absolutely remarkably well on both flanks. They defended very well and they kept Man City very quiet for a big part of the game.”

Arsenal need a win to bolster their hopes of a top-four place, while Wigan need the three points to avoid the drop. Wenger accepts it is a critical game.

“They are important games but that's what you want to play for,” he said. “Two months ago we had no chance to be where we are today so we can only be happy with what we have done.

“Two months ago our destiny was not in our hands. Today it is so we have done very well, so now let's finish the job and continue to play like we have done and take the points.”
