Cech - What gave us extra confidence

Petr Cech celebrates after keeping a clean sheet at Southampton

First Manchester United, now Southampton. It's been a good few days for us, with two wins and six points raising our hopes of finishing in the top four.

Petr Cech has impressed in both games, keeping back-to-back Premier League clean sheets for the first time since the turn of the year.

At St Mary's on Wednesday, we were indebted to our goalkeeper for two superb first-half saves - from Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond - which proved to be crucial as we scored twice after the break.

“Of course I’m happy to contribute,” Cech said after the match. “I thought it was their best spell - they had two chances and when you keep a clean sheet, it’s been very difficult for them to break us.

“When you have that feeling that one goal will do it, you play with more confidence.

“I think it will give us a hope, because if we keep the pressure on the other teams, maybe they will have an unlucky game or drop points somewhere.

“We need to make sure we are ready to take advantage of that.

“We concentrate on our games, we go game-by-game and we have to win all of them to give ourselves a chance. Then we will see what happens.”
