‘We must show we’re a strong unit now’

Arsene Wenger has always said it is the way teams respond to defeat that defines them and, after back-to-back losses, we are in need of a strong reaction against Hull City.

Saturday’s defeat at Chelsea left us 12 points adrift of the league leaders but, with 14 Premier League games still to play, the boss says our solidarity can propel us to a strong finish.

“The team wins and the team loses,” Wenger said. “When you win sometimes some players are singled out as they are treated like exceptional players but when you don’t do well sometimes just focus on a little bit more of the team aspect and not try to blame each other.

“The blame culture is part of the perception of people as you say, but what is important is that we show that we are united. We have a good opportunity to show that we are a united strong unit and that we can bounce back.

“When you don’t win you cannot as well say that all is well. You have to analyse that something is not right. It is our job to find where and to have a strong united response.”

This weekend, our “strong united response” will have to come against Marco Silva’s in-form Hull City side.

The Tigers have recorded four wins in eight games since the Portuguese head coach took over at the start of the month, with last Saturday’s win against Liverpool lifting them off the foot of the table for the first time since Silva’s arrival.

“He is doing well,” Wenger said. “There are many top managers in Europe and they all come to England. But I also believe that they played well with Mike Phelan but so many times they were not rewarded by results and they had injuries as well. So overall I think Hull have always played good football.”
