If there is anyone who knows what it takes to be a successful left back, it is Nigel Winterburn.
The former Arsenal defender made 584 appearances during his 13-year stay in north London, helping us win seven major honours in the process.
Winterburn has watched Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal compete for our left-back spot over the past few years and is excited about the “friendly rivalry” between them.
"Last season he was my most consistent player at the club"
“Gibbs and Monreal have been fantastic this season, but Nacho has made the position his own at the moment,” he told the Arsenal Weekly podcast. "One or two people have been saying he’s not been as consistent as last season, and last season he was my most consistent player at the club.
“Kieran’s had a few good games when he’s come in. Unfortunately, after three games he’s had a little injury which has disrupted his momentum.
“I’m not watching them train, so it’s difficult for me to choose between them, but Kieran Gibbs has got all the qualities needed to be a modern left back.
"He’s got to make sure that he uses everything he has in his locker to become a regular starter here. It’s healthy competition between them, though, because the second one has a dip, the other will be there ready to snap up the opportunity."
