‘He scored one of best goals I’ve seen’

By Lloyd Webb

Ray Parlour says Anders Limpar’s goal against Liverpool in 1992 was “one of the best goals” he witnessed in his playing career.

The Swede lobbed Reds goalkeeper Mike Hooper from the halfway line at Highbury, and Parlour has picked him as one of players that stand out for him in the Arsenal Legends squad that will face Milan Glorie on Saturday.

“What an excellent player Anders was,” Parlour told Arsenal Player. "On the ball he was very gifted, and was probably the first real foreign player to play here over the year,s but he was an excellent player. I’m sure the fans - the older generation – and he will enjoy the moment [on Saturday].

"He had little twinkle toes and I used to call him that because he was really nimble. I think the goal he scored against Liverpool from the halfway line at Highbury was one of the best I have seen."

Parlour is also looking forward to playing alongside a number of his other former team-mates, including Jens Lehmann and David Seaman.

“Jens and David were fantastic goalkeepers,” he said. "After David Seaman left we were thinking if we can get a goalkeeper as good as him. Jens came in, and what a fantastic man he was. He was a real winner and a real leader which we needed. He was superb in that unbeaten season - he was so important to that.

"One game that sticks out for me was Portsmouth away. We were two games away from going unbeaten for the whole season and we drew 1-1. He had an absolute blinder. Jens Lehmann was saving everything, so I think he was an important player.

"I played my whole career with David Seaman - brilliant goalkeeper and one of the best in the Premier League’s history. It will be great to see those two guys."
