‘I can’t take the smile off my face’

Casey Stoney believes Arsenal Ladies’ victory in the Women’s FA Cup final was fully deserved.

The Ladies won the competition for the 14th time on Saturday, with Danielle Carter’s 20-yard stunner enough to beat London rivals Chelsea.

Despite going into the match as underdogs, Pedro Martinez Losa’s side produced an accomplished display at Wembley - and that delighted Stoney.

"I’m just trying to soak up every minute because it’s not every day you get to play at Wembley in an FA Cup final"

“I can’t take the smile off my face,” she told Arsenal Player. “I’m just trying to soak up every minute because it’s not every day you get to play at Wembley in an FA Cup final.

“I have to say we deserved it today - credit to our squad, our team, our players out there and the manager for getting his tactics right. I think we were spot on and Chelsea didn’t know what hit them.

“This was absolutely amazing because against all odds, we won. We weren’t the favourites, we weren’t expected to win but we went out there and showed exactly what we’re capable of.

“Hopefully this can be the springboard for the rest of our season.

“I think every single player ran their legs off today. The fact that it said zero next to Chelsea’s name is something I’m so proud of.

“As a defender, that’s what we’re here to do. We’re here to keep clean sheets and against such a fantastic forward line, it’s amazing.”
