‘Don Howe was an extraordinary man’

Arsene Wenger has hailed Don Howe as “an extraordinary man” and an “exceptional coach”.

The former Arsenal defender had an immense influence at the club as a player, coach and manager over a period spanning five decades.

The Gunners wore black armbands to commemorate Howe’s death in their Boxing Day defeat to Southampton, and afterwards Wenger paid tribute to him.

“Unfortunately for Don, we couldn’t win the game for him here,” the manager told Arsenal Player. “I would have loved to do that for him because he was a great Arsenal coach, a great Arsenal man and has contributed tremendously to the success of this club.

“His special qualities were his huge football knowledge, his passion and his desire to help people.

“He was an extraordinary man and you will not see one player who worked with Don Howe who does not have a huge respect for him. I personally feel he has been fantastic for Arsenal and was an exceptional coach as well.”
