On Monday, December 7 Arsenal Ladies invited five secondary schools Yavneh, Bushey Meads, City Academy, Stanborough and Joan of Arc to take part in an Arsenal Ladies themed literacy tournament.
Using the newly formed Arsenal Ladies document the schools were invited to participate in a 2 hours football tournament and supplemented this with 1.5 hours of literacy work.
The girls aged 11 and 12 years old are all involved in Arsenal Ladies and Arsenal in the community projects throughout Hertfordshire and Islington and we were delighted to welcome them to the fantastic Arsenal training ground.
The players were also greeted by Arsenal Ladies Legend Kelly Smith who spent some time with each school speaking with the girls about her football career.
Arsenal Ladies Development Officer commented: “As young players reach secondary school age they have to deal with numerous pressures and we are delighted to be able to run numerous community projects to help engage and retain girls of all levels in football.”
Supported by Arsenal in the community, Premier League, Hertfordshire FA, Hertsmere Council and St Albans Council we have delivered 180 sessions to girls and women of all ages from September - November. This tournament was a fantastic opportunity to reward some of our regular participants with a chance to visit the Arsenal training ground but also meet Kelly Smith.
