Arsenal legend Bob Wilson believes Petr Cech is “the best and most experienced goalkeeper in the world”.

The Czech Republic international has made a fine start to life in north London, making a series of acrobatic saves en route to keeping nine clean sheets in all competitions.

Cech is just one shutout away from equalling David James’ all-time Premier League clean sheet record. Wilson, who spent 11 years at the club as a player and 28 as goalkeeping coach, says the 33-year-old has been a crucial signing.

“I said he would be an amazing addition,” Wilson told the Arsenal Weekly podcast. “From what I’ve heard from the boys in the dressing room, he is just that. He has the experience, he has the stature.

“Outside Buffon, who is still playing but I think is slightly vulnerable now, Petr Cech is the best and most experienced goalkeeper in the world at this time. We have the most experienced and best all-round goalkeeper in the world.

“Watching the Sunderland game, he made two saves in that game that were pure perfection. One came early on when Watmore got through and Petr Cech made his goal look tiny. He shot virtually straight at him.

“Early on in the second half, he made an extraordinary save. He expects the unexpected which, as a goalkeeper, you have to do. It was sheer instinct, anticipation, knowledge.

“I gather that he’s an amazing guy around the dressing room and the training ground.”
