‘Seaman’s personality made him special’

Petr Cech says David Seaman’s calm authority made him a special goalkeeper.

The former England international played 564 times and won nine major trophies during his 13-year spell at Arsenal.

Cech was a huge admirer of Seaman, and says his coolness under pressure made him stand out.

“His personality [made him special],” he told Arsenal Player. “When you saw him playing, he was not a goalkeeper who looks spectacular or flies right and left in the goal.

“He’s not all over the place, he was just someone who was calm and made important saves at important times.

“I first really noticed him during Euro 96 here in England because the Czech Republic were doing well and progressing.

“In the end Czech Republic played in the final against Germany and as the tournament went on there was a lot of excitement from the England supporters and everybody was saying, ‘This is the team who can finally win the European Championship’.

“It started with David Seaman and if you go through the ranks they had some brilliant players.”
