Wenger - We played with intelligence

Arsene Wenger is pleased with how Arsenal responded to the hostile atmosphere at St James’ Park.

The Gunners secured their second away win of the season against a physical Newcastle United side who received six yellow cards as they looked to thwart Arsenal’s quick-passing game.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was also sent off for the hosts after a dangerous challenge on Francis Coqeulin, and Wenger was impressed with how his side remained focused to bring a hard-fought three points back to north London.

"We won the ball without going into too many tackles. That’s always a sign of intelligence and I’m very happy about that"

“It was a bit of a strange game where we needed different qualities to win,” the manager told Arsenal Player. “We needed to keep our nerves, not to overreact, to be patient, intelligent and mature.

“We showed interesting qualities and it is three points. You know at the start of the season that you go to Crystal Palace, you go to Newcastle United and if you come out with six points then that is absolutely fantastic. Overall I’m happy.

“I felt that we were very good defensively and overall I’m absolutely happy with what we did. We won the ball without going into too many tackles. That’s always a sign of intelligence and I’m very happy about that.”
