Arsene Wenger has disclosed how he first identified Calum Chambers as a transfer target.
The teenager signed for Arsenal from Southampton in the summer after making 22 league appearances for the south-coast club during his debut season.
Chambers first came to Wenger's attention in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at St Mary's in January, when the Arsenal manager was impressed with various aspects of the 19-year-old's game.
"The first time I watched him was in our 2-2 draw against Southampton when we played them away last season," the manager told the official matchday programme. "I was impressed by his understanding of the game and his interception qualities.
"As well as that, I liked the fact that he was early on the ball. His reading of the game and his transition to quickly go forward also stood out, and his touch was good as well.
"I checked his birth date after the game and was very interested."
