Thomas Vermaelen's World Cup is over after his Belgium side were beaten by Argentina in the quarter-finals.

The Arsenal captain - recovering from a hamstring problem - watched from the bench as an early strike from Gonzalo Higuain took Argentina through in Brasilia.

Higuain latched onto Angel Di Maria's deflected pass in the eighth minute to fire past Thibaut Courtois.

Higuain clipped the crossbar with a rising shot early in the second half before Marouane Fellaini headed Belgium's clearest chance over the bar.
