Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil started as Germany became the first country to reach four consecutive World Cup semi-finals by beating France 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro.
Mats Hummels' 13th-minute header was enough to see of Les Bleus, who brought Gunners duo Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud off the bench in the second half.
Two more Arsenal stars, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, played no part for Germany but Ozil completed 83 minutes before he was replaced by Mario Gotze.
Hummels got the better of opposing centre back Raphael Varane to score the winning goal before Ozil set up an excellent chance for Andre Schurrle in the second half.
Germany will face Brazil or Colombia in Belo Horizonte in the semi-finals.
