‘Being favourites doesn’t win you games’

Arsene Wenger insists that being favourites means nothing and that only strong performances will help his side lift the FA Cup this season.

Following Manchester City’s surprise exit on Sunday, the Gunners have been installed as the heavy favourites to win the competition.

Wenger accepts that this, but stressed that results so far prove that his side will have to be at their best if they are to triumph.

"If you want to say that we will be favourites, I agree with you, but being favourites doesn’t win you games"

“The cup is the cup,” he said. “What we have learned is that the consistency of [semi-final opponents] Wigan shows that they have the quality to deal with the pressure in the cup.

“They created a huge surprise so we are warned that only a top-level performance will get us through.

“If you want to say that we will be favourites, I agree with you, but being favourites doesn’t win you games. Performances win you games and that’s what we have to focus on.”
