Miedema - It’s all about helping the team

Arsenal Women

Vivianne Miedema scored her 16th goal of the season against Reading on Sunday, setting a new Women’s Super League record.

There are seven games remaining for the 22-year-old to extend her tally, but personal records aren’t on her mind.

We spoke to the Netherlands International after the final whistle - and this is what she said:

on scoring after two minutes…

We needed that. Scoring an early goal makes it easier to get into the game and from there on it was easy to control. We were just so happy that we started strong after the past few games that we’ve had, especially with the injuries that we’ve currently got in the squad. Coming out today and instantly scoring was perfect for us.

on preparing for the game without Montemurro…

It’s obviously been a bit different anyway because we’ve just come back from being with the national team too, so we’ve all been very busy and very tired! I’ve just come back from a 12-hour flight from South Africa, but it’s been great to come back and train three times before playing this game. I think we should be happy with what we’ve done today.

on scoring the most goals in a single WSL season…

Honestly, I’m just happy that I can help the team. I’m a number nine so my game is all about scoring goals, and there’s still seven more games to go, so I’m hoping to score plenty more!

on Little scoring her first goal since returning from injury…

It’s so important to have Kim on the pitch. She’s crucial to our team, especially with Lia Walti out of the side at the moment. We need her in the midfield and she showed that today.

on facing Crawley Wasps…

I don’t know what to expect, but these games are always hard because in the end we’re the only team that can lose, so we just need to stay focused, win and move on to the games after that.
