Leno’s shirt number is revealed

Bernd Leno's shirt number will be 19

Our new goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, will wear No 19 for us this coming season.

The number is of special significance to the Germany international, as it reflects the day he signed for us - June 19.

Leno also made his first-team debut aged 19 while on loan at Bayer Leverkusen from Vfb Stuttgart.

Let’s hope the number 19 brings more happy memories for Bernd this season.

Leno - What I learnt from working with Lehmann

Bernd Leno will become the second German goalkeeper to play for us after joining from Bayer Leverkusen - and he admits he learnt some key lessons from his predecessor.

Having grown up idolising Jens Lehmann, Leno was thrilled to have the chance to work alongside him at the start of his career and says the experience was invaluable.

"When I was a child, Iker Casillas was always my idol, but when I was at Stuttgart, there were many players, like Timo Hildebrand and Jens Lehmann," Leno told Arsenal Player.

"I watched many of Jens’ training sessions to learn from him. I had some training sessions with him when I was very young, about 16 or 17 years old.

"Jens was around 40 years old and for me it was very exciting. He was so concentrated, so professional and that’s the mentality that you need as a professional goalkeeper."

Picture special: Leno's first day of training

Bernd Leno underwent his first day of pre-season training as an Arsenal player on Monday.

Leno - What Musti told me about Arsenal

Bernd Leno may be the newest member of our squad, but he won’t be a total stranger when he walks into the dressing room for the first time.

Our new goalkeeper has played alongside Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi for Germany, and actually came up through his country’s youth ranks with the latter.

“I already know Musti and Mesut Ozil from the national team, plus Xhaka, Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan from the Bundesliga,” Leno told Arsenal Player. “I talked to Musti about Arsenal many months ago.

“He said it’s a fantastic club with a fantastic stadium and fantastic fans. I watched games on the TV in Germany and yes, Arsenal is a fantastic club.

“I’ve known Musti for about 10 or 11 years. We grew up together in the youth national teams, the under-17s through to the under-21s. It’s funny to see us together at Arsenal now!”

Having played against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the last five seasons, Leno is looking forward to being on the same team as our No 14.

“Yes, it will be special because in the past I’ve always played against him,” he added. “He’s so fast and as a goalkeeper you have to respect his qualities, his speed. Now we’ll train together and I hope he’ll score for us.”
