Two of our players were in action for their nations on Friday night, with Danny Welbeck scoring for England and Mesut Ozil providing an assist for Germany.
Here’s the full round-up of how they fared:
Danny Welbeck
Malta 0-4 England
Friday, September 1
Danny Welbeck scored in England’s comprehensive World Cup qualifying win over Malta. The 26-year-old was a 75th-minute substitute at Ta' Qali stadium and scored England’s third goal, racing onto the end of Harry Kane’s long ball to volley over Andrew Hogg.
Kane also netted twice, with Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand scoring his first international goal. England top their qualifying group by two points, and face second-placed Slovakia on Monday night.
Mesut Ozil
Czech Republic 1-2 Germany
Friday, September 1
Mesut Ozil played the full 90 minutes and claimed an assist in Germany’s World Cup qualifying win over the Czech Republic. It only took our No 11 four minutes to create Germany’s opening goal, when he fizzed an inch-perfect pass into Timo Werner’s path for the RB Leipzig forward to finish.
Vladimir Darida then equalised with 12 minutes remaining, but Mats Hummels’ towering header two minutes from time maintained Germany’s perfect record in World Cup qualifying.
