Interview

‘Hein is a good keeper in the making’

Steve Bould praised Karl Hein’s impressive performance as we advanced into the next round of the PL International Cup after beating Leicester 3-0 on Friday night.

Hein made a number of crucial saves during the victory while goals from Robbie Burton, Flo Balogun and James Olayinka secured all three points.

We spoke to our head coach after the match and this is what he said:

on the performance…

I thought the first-half performance was very good, other than the first 10 minutes which were really tough. The second half was a little bit disappointing, although we scored two goals, because I think they got right on top of the game and they possibly should have scored. We got in a nice clean sheet, which makes a difference. It was tough but there were some really good performances but it was a game of two halves I think.

on the clean sheet…

I’m delighted, we spoke at half-time and I said I didn’t care if we scored another goal we needed a clean sheet. We got away with it a little bit and they had a lot of chances or half chances and Karl’s (Hein) has made a couple of saves with his feet and caught couple of balls. We had a lot of pressure in the second half but Flo (Balogun) scores a great goal.

on the competition so far…

It’s been a really tough competition. Villarreal were very good as were Zagreb and tonight it was physically very tough and demanding. I think it’s probably a little bit higher than the Premier League 2, if I'm honest.

on Karl Hein’s performance…

I think he’s had a great season. He kicks off the year and I think he gave away a couple of goals which is normal for a young kid, but he’s really matured and he looks like a really good keeper in the making.

on the plans between now and our next game…

I think since Mikel has been in charge, we’ve seen an awful lot of our kids and I guess that’ll continue. It’s great for them to join in with the first team and see what’s going on over there. I guess that’ll be the plan and we’ll look to work a bit more on our defending.
