‘That game physically knocked me off my feet’

Even now, nearly three decades on, the emotions come rushing back to the surface for Tony Adams when he remembers Anfield 89.

Mr Arsenal experienced so much throughout his incredible career with us, but lifting the title after Michael Thomas’ late winner on Merseyside topped the lot.

“It’s the only game that’s physically knocked me off my feet after the game,”  Adams told Arsenal Player. “Not the actual goal, but the fact we had actually won.

“I just went down and the emotion knocked me sidewards. I just fell to my knees, I’ve never done that in the whole of my career.

“Maybe because it was the first one and no one expected us to do it, maybe the emotion just got the better of me. I just kind of went ‘Oh my God!’ and literally my legs just gave way.

“I spoke to Jim Rosenthal the year before after we got bombed out of the Euros in 1988, “ he continued. “I said to him to keep an eye on us because I think we’ve got a hell of a chance of winning the league. We’ve got a good squad and he just kind of went ‘Yeah, OK then’.

“I had a disastrous Euros personally in ’88 but I think I focused right back into the team and we had a good bunch of guys there who were all working every week and we went and pulled it off which was an amazing thing.”
