Interview

'Football is about efficiency... We weren't'

There was no hiding Arsène Wenger's frustration after we were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United on Saturday.

After the match, the manager spoke to Arsenal Player. Read on to find out what he said.

On the result…

Today I am very angry because the team produced a quality performance with desire, they were strong mentally and overall in a game of that stature to have 33 shots on goal and nothing to show for it… I tell you tonight that I am absolutely angry. When you see the potential we have and in the end the way we started at the back is very difficult to swallow. We know we need to be dominant in the challenges and the first two goals are hard to accept.

on De Gea’s 14 saves…

We could have finished better and at the end of the day we haven’t been efficient enough in the two boxes and that’s why we lost the game.

on paying for our defensive mistakes…

Yes, I think even at 2-1 we cannot afford to concede another goal. We were going at 2-1 with 25 minutes to go and could come back, but the 3-1 is the killer. Again, we made a huge mistake and gave them the third goal.

on whether he still had hope at 3-1 down…

Yes, if you come back to 3-2 with 10 minutes to go you still have chances to come, we were a bit unlucky with the penalty claims again and that’s it.

on the positives being that we played with intensity…

That’s what we want and overall I think have to take the positives out of this game, but as well not to be fooled. Football is about efficiency in both boxes and at the back and front we weren’t efficient enough.
