Interview

Emery on Torreira, Leno and the other new boys

We’ve got a new coach, and FIVE new signings.

Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have all joined us since the end of last season, and Unai Emery talked about all five when he sat down with Arsenal Media this week.

Here’s what the head coach said:

on our new players…

First, I think all the players are very important. The players who were working here last year or more years - and the new players. [It’s important] to have them together, to improve together in a new work in a new way with new coaches.

on the fans being excited by Lucas Torreira…

He is a very young player but his career is interesting in Italy and in the World Cup he improved very quickly. I think for us, this midfielder is very important and he is coming with ambition to get better here and to improve with us.

on what Sokratis will bring…

Experience. He has experience in his career and we want him to give us his experience on the pitch.

on Stephan Lichtsteiner…

Also, Lichtsteiner has this experience and on the pitch he gives us that. In more situations we can use this experience together with young players.

on what he can tell us about Bernd Leno…

Leno also comes from the German league and I think this is a very, very high [quality] league. Here we wanted one goalkeeper who helps us with the experience and the quality.

on Matteo Guendouzi…

He is a young player who wants to improve here and he chooses to be with us. He comes to Arsenal to improve.
