Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sat down with the media for the first time recently after signing his new contract.
Our club captain discussed his reaction to the news, the announcement itself, following in the footsteps of legends and facing Liverpool.
This is what he had to say:
on his new deal…
I don’t know [where 'signed da ting' came from], from the fans I think! They asked me every day for a few months and finally I ‘signed da ting’, so I’m really happy.
on announcing it live…
I was shy. I’m a guy who is really shy, and when I see a lot of people like this, just watching me, it is different from just playing football you know? You have to announce something big in your life, so I was a bit nervous. But then I felt comfortable and started to speak to Wrighty, then Laca came in as well and I was more relaxed, more chilled.
on emulating Arsenal legends...
I think everyone remembers them because they had this charisma, everyone respected them here at the club and in the world of football and I’ve been watching a few videos, I’ve seen Henry playing and I have a lot of respect for them. They inspire me, so I want to become like them.
on the Liverpool game...
Yes, I think [it is a potential marker of progress] even if it is maybe early in the season but it is still a big game, so we are going to see if we are ready to compete. We have started well so we just have to play hard.
on Mikel Arteta...
Since he came in he has brought an atmosphere that everyone feels like they are at home - so everyone has to do the homework as well! The mentality around the club is going very, very well and everyone is going in the same way, which is very important. Everyone has the same objective, the goal is to bring the club back where it belongs.
