Arsenal v Manchester City: The Brief

Arsenal and Manchester City Women

For the final time at home this season, we’re in Women’s Super League action when we host Manchester City at Meadow Park on Saturday.

THE OPPOSITION

Despite a flying start to the season, City have had a tough time of it in recent months.

Nick Cushing’s side were unbeaten in all competitions until the start of February, when they fell to a shock defeat against Birmingham City in the WSL.

Since then, we beat them in the Continental Cup final, they were knocked out of the SSE Women’s FA Cup and Champions League, and their title challenge has hit a major bump in the road.

Sat three points behind leaders Chelsea with just three games remaining, simply cannot afford to slip up again on Saturday.

LAST TIME WE MET

The Continental Cup final was a memorable one for Joe Montemurro.

Not only was it his first piece of silverware since arriving in November, it also allowed him to see just how talented the group of players he inherited is.

With both sides limited to few goalscoring opportunities on the night, Vivianne Miedema’s clinical finish was enough to edge out our opponents and secure the first title of Montemurro’s tenure in north London.

It was our fifth Continental Cup title in all and a reminder to critics that, even though we were underdogs, we should never be underestimated.

ONE TO WATCH

It’s certainly going to be an emotional afternoon for Alex Scott.

The former England international is set to be involved in her final home game for us, having announced in October that she will retire at the end of the season.

Only four players have made more appearances for us since the start of the 1999/00 season than Scott, with the right back netting 32 times in that period, including the Champions League winner during our quadruple-winning 2006/07 season.

Our departing captain withdrew from our SSE Women’s FA Cup final squad last Saturday, but will be hoping to go out on a high in front of her biggest supporters at Meadow Park this weekend.
