Coaching for Life is our flagship football development programme in partnership with Save the Children. It focuses on the power of football to impact the physical, emotional and mental well-being of boys and girls affected by conflict and violence. We run the programme in Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan – home to almost 80,000 Syrian refugees, half of whom are children.
In 2018 Per Mertesacker launched Coaching for Life in Jordan in the presence of many families who had fled their homes to escape war in their own country.
Since the launch of Coaching for Life, we’ve built five new pitches in at the Za’atari camp. It’s always with great fondness that we remember the first pitch we played on or watched a match at, probably because our love for the game started there. It’s all about that feeling of being part of a team, a sense of belonging, and making new friends. For many of the children in Za’atari, the new pitches in the camp are creating those memories.
The children wear their Arsenal shirts with pride on the pitches and being part of the Arsenal family is so important to them, just as it is to all the young people we support in our local communities, at our Community Hub and on local pitches here in north London.
Coaching for Life grew from more than 35 years of expertise from our Arsenal in the Community team who continue to support vulnerable young people locally. Combining that with the humanitarian experience and knowledge of Save The Children, thousands of young people have benefitted from Coaching for Life, on the pitch and in the classroom. With your help, we can reach many more.
