Arsenal Academy slumped to a third successive League defeat at
the hands of West Ham United on Saturday.
Goals in either half, first from Daniel Kearns and then Freddie
Sears, sealed a valuable win for the visitors and compounded what
has been a miserable start to 2008 for the young Gunners.
Still smarting from their midweek exit from the FA Youth Cup,
Steve Bould's boys took to the London Colney field aiming to
get their season back on track. This seemed the ideal fixture for
that - after all, Arsenal hit the Hammers for six earlier in the
campaign.
However after 20 tentative minutes Kearns cut in from wide left
and unleashed a fierce drive which deflected past Arsenal stopper
Wojciech Szczesny. The Gunners reached the interval with the
deficit still at one but, barely one minute after the restart, West
Ham doubled their advantage.
As many of his team-mates appealed for a penalty, Sears pounced
on a loose ball to slot home with the referee playing advantage. It
was cruel luck on Arsenal and, despite a commendable second-half
effort, any kind of breakthrough eluded them.
