Stefan Schwarz

This well-travelled Swedish midfielder only spent one year at Highbury but he did enough to win over the fans and make a lasting impression.

Schwarz was relatively well-known when George Graham signed him from Benfica in the summer of 1994, mainly because he had just helped Sweden to a third-place finish at the World Cup in the United States.

He was billed as the midfield playmaker Arsenal had needed since David Rocastle left for Leeds two years earlier, but in truth Schwarz was not a schemer. He was tigerish in the tackle, courageous and a tireless worker, but his passing was precise rather than penetrative.

The Swede certainly gave the Gunners steel in the centre and he was a pivotal figure in the Club's run to the 1995 European Cup Winners' Cup Final.

The holders appeared to be heading out at the Semi-Final stage when Schwarz fired home a late free-kick at Sampdoria to force extra-time and then a penalty shoot-out (from which David Seaman emerged the hero).

Nayim's freakish winner in Paris ensured there would be no happy ending and Schwarz moved on in the summer of 1995 as new manager Bruce Rioch signed David Platt.
