Academy product Kieran made 22 appearances last season, featuring predominantly as a left back but also slotting in at left wing back after we moved to a 3-4-3 formation in April.
A dependable, hard-working defender who made his debut for us in 2007, Kieran was named captain for our 4-0 League Cup win at Nottingham Forest and retained the armband for our further two matches in that competition.
He started 18 games in all during 2016/17, and particularly impressed in the 4-1 Champions League win at Basel, showcasing his attacking credentials with a dynamic display in which he set up Lucas’ first two goals.
Kieran is now in his 11th season with us, having joined from Wimbledon’s now-defunct academy in 2004. He began his career as a winger but was moulded into a left back, gaining further experience of the position with a loan spell at Norwich City in 2008.
Technically adept, fast across the ground and always committed, his first Arsenal goal came in 2011, equalising with a header as we beat Shrewsbury Town 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.
A former England youth international, Kieran represented his nation at under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels before making his senior debut for the Three Lions alongside Jack Wilshere in a 2-1 win over Hungary at Wembley in 2010.
