Having initially joined Arsenal as an outside left in September 1958, Ian McKechnie made his league debut in goal away at Blackburn Rovers in 1961 after his goalkeeping ability had been noted during a practice game.
The keeper went on to make 23 league appearances plus a further two in European competitions during his six years at the Club.
Upon leaving, McKechnie signed for Southend before going on to make over 200 appearances for Hull City.
After retiring, McKechnie became manager of Sligo Rovers.
