WHAT HAPPENED
We extended our lead at the the top of the Women’s Super League table to six points on Sunday by running out 4-0 winners over Everton.
Despite heading into the game off the back of a busy international break, Joe Montemurro’s side started on the front foot and wasted no time in testing Kirstie Levell.
Jordan Nobbs’ driven effort was turned behind for a corner, before Vivianne Miedema’s first-time strike was pushed away to safety.
Nobbs and Miedema then showed great understanding to combine quickly on the edge of the box, but the latter was dispossessed before she could pull the trigger from a dangerous position.
It looked like we’d never find an opener when Katie McCabe, Miedema and Beth Mead were all denied in quick succession from inside the six-yard box - but with less than a minute remaining of the first-half, Danielle van de Donk gave us the lead.
The Netherlands international received the ball inside the box, gained her composure and rifled a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.
And while we had failed to show a clinical edge in the first half, we were ruthless in the opening exchanges of the second.
Mead stormed down the right wing and picked out Miedema inside the box, who held off her marker and teed the ball up for Nobbs. Our captain wriggled free of Georgie Brougham and fired the ball into the bottom left corner.
The Toffees defence had been rocked and less than a minute later we furthered our advantage through Miedema. The 22-year-old raced through on goal and made no mistake in coolly slotting past Levell.
Miedema continued to threaten their defence with her physical style - and in the 66th minute she scored her second of the afternoon with the pick of the bunch.
Nobbs whipped the ball into the box and Miedema was there to find the back of the net with a stunning first-time finish.
Despite another dominant performance and clean sheet on the road, though, we still left Merseyside with a sour taste in our mouths. Nobbs left the field on a stretcher with just eight minutes to go, causing concern for Montemurro ahead of a packed schedule.
