‘We’ll certainly start with a back three’

Cech, Koscielny, Mertesacker and Wenger

Arsene Wenger, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Petr Cech sat alongside coaches and players from Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers at a press conference shortly after we touched down in Australia on Tuesday.

The manager was asked about his new two-year contract with the club and what his targets are. Here’s what he said:

on what we’ll do differently this season…

We’ll test many systems. At the moment, in pre-season, we are in the continuity of the end of last season. In some games, we will play with four at the back and some with three, but at the start of the season we will certainly play with three.

on his new contract and his goals…

The goal is simple: to win the next game and win every single game. The Premier League today is highly competitive, there are six or seven teams who can win trophies and every single trophy is very difficult to win. We want to fight for the Premier League, we want to fight again for the FA Cup and we play in the Europa League and we want to win that. We have to prepare well to do that. We finished last season well, we won 10 of the last 11 games and we want to continue that and start in a very strong way.

on his goals in the next two years…

Well, I am not on a personal trip. I have the luck to make a very long career in my job and I am completely committed to doing well for Arsenal, to do well means to win the Premier League and to hopefully win the Champions League [one day] as well. I think I stayed for such a long time at Arsenal because first of all the club is about values. I stayed at this club for a long time because it has values that are important to me. After, one of those values is to win trophies. More important is that it is important to know who we are, what is important to us in the game and use that basis to win football games and that is what I will do until the end of my career. On top of that we want to win trophies. You cannot only live inside the club, we want to win the next trophy. It is important that the club is bigger than that and has a stronger basis than that. On that level I want to win every game, when I lose a game I am absolutely mad and sad. But that is part of being a coach.
