The race for Champions League football is now very much on.
Saturday’s win over Manchester City lifted us to third in the Women’s Super League, just one point behind Nick Cushing’s side with just two games left to play.
Kim Little set up Beth Mead’s winner at Meadow Park, and they both spoke to the media after the match to discuss our quest for a top-two finish.
on the turnaround…
KL: Even in the first half we had a good game but we made a mistake and were punished. In the second half we turned it around, played some nice football and scored two good goals.
on what the manager said at half-time…
BM: He said he was impressed with how we were playing, that we were unlucky to have conceded the goal we did and just to keep playing. He just told us to stay positive and keep enjoying what we were doing, and we did just that.
on her winning goal…
BM: I was in the right place at the right time. I think the ball was meant to be for Viv but obviously it came through to me and I got on the end of it. I was just glad to get the goal for the team.
on what’s changed since Joe Montemurro has taken over…
KL: Joe came in and has restructured us, has re-emphasised our philosophy and what we want to do. I think you can see that in the way we want to play, especially at home. It’s all about keeping the ball and going right up against teams. At times we’ve not done that this season, but at home and in today’s game you could see it.
on what we need to do to go further next season…
BM: As a team, we just need a bit more consistency. We’ve been very up and down all season with results that haven’t gone our way. Our main aim is to recreate our football that we’ve been playing today, to enjoy it and just keep on pushing.
