‘Second and third goals killed the game’

Laurent Koscielny in action against Watford

Laurent Koscielny captained Arsenal to an impressive 3-1 victory against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday. He spoke to the media afterwards and this is what he had to say:

on the win…
I think it was very important. We didn’t start the season well but we showed some good things at Leicester and today we wanted to finish the job before the international break to get the three points. We played very well between the lines, they played with five defenders and we were better. In the second half, we were a bit asleep and needed to wake up. We gave the ball to Watford and they can play with it, but the most important thing was to get the three points.

on the timing of the first and second goals…
It is very important to kill the game. In the first half you can score three goals and kill the game, which is very good. In the second half they came back at us, so if we hadn’t scored the second and third goals it would have been more difficult for us. You need to play and score.

 on dealing with negativity…
It is always difficult, it is like a mountain - you have some good and bad results and you need to stay strong. We are together and we need to play and get some wins in a row. The season is very long and you can see with all the money in the league, that every team can sign good players. You need to be focused on our philosophy and how we want to play.

on how new signings could help the title challenge…
First of all, we have a few people injured. When you start the season with Welbeck injured, Mertesacker and then Gabriel out, it is difficult. You need to have some players, because when you play every three days in September, October and November you need a big squad to fight in every competition. I am sure the boss will buy some players to help us.
