Arsene Wenger believes England should take their best young players to the European Under-21 Championship.
Calum Chambers, Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all eligible for selection ahead of Gareth Southgate’s 30-man preliminary squad announcement on Wednesday, but the manager believes only Chambers will feature.
"The situation in England is not negative with the young players... it is important now England can win a tournament like that."
“First of all I think Wilshere will go with the full national team and Oxlade-Chamberlain at the moment is not available,” Wenger said. “I looked this morning, since January, he has played one game, so the first challenge is for him to be fit first.
“Of course you want England to do well,” the manager added. “I want Gareth Southgate to do well with his team. They have good young players.
“The situation in England is not negative with the young players, the quality has gone up, it is important now England can win a tournament like that.
“The best players who are available should go. Is Harry Kane in there? Will he be in the senior squad or the under-21s? I don’t know. Why not? Wilshere has gone before.”
