Mikel Arteta is the new captain of Arsenal Football Club.

Arsène Wenger confirmed the appointment on Sunday straight after the Spaniard had lifted the Community Shield at Wembley.

Arteta was vice-captain to Thomas Vermaelen, who had departed for Barcelona the day before, and took the armband for much of last season when the Belgian was out of the side. Wenger also confirmed that Per Mertesacker is the new vice-captain.

“It will be No 1, Arteta and No 2, Mertesacker,” said the manager.

Arteta used social media to express his delight. He tweeted: “Great to lift another trophy and a massive honour to be named captain of Arsenal. Let’s have a great season.”
