Millwall Lionesses v Arsenal: The Brief

Emma Mitchell celebrates with Danielle van de Donk

After returning to winning ways against Everton in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, we’re back in Continental Cup action against Millwall Lionesses on Wednesday.

We were 7-0 winners in our group-stage opener against London Bees last month, and are looking to consolidate our position at the top of Group One South.

THE OPPOSITION

Millwall have started their league campaign strongly but are yet to pick up a win in this competition.

The Lionesses are unbeaten in the WSL 2, topping the table after picking up three wins from four, but slipped to defeat in their Continental Cup opener against Watford in October.

One reason for their impressive start is Charie Devlin’s form. The former Gunner has scored three times in five appearances for the Lionesses this season, and is likely to line up alongside another familiar face in Rianna Dean on Wednesday night.

ONE TO WATCH

It looks like Beth Mead is now rediscovering her best form.

The England Under-23 international burst on to the scene with Sunderland, scoring 77 goals in 78 games for the Black Cats to secure a big move to north London in January.

And now she is fully settled in, Mead has been starting to make a name for herself here as well. The forward scored twice from the spot during our 7-0 win over London Bees, and scored a crucial second to help us beat Everton last weekend.

LAST TIME WE MET

We beat Millwall 4-0 at the Den to help us top our 2015 Continental Cup group, thanks to three goals in five first-half minutes from Dan Carter, Rachel Yankey and Chloe Kelly.

Dominique Janssen then scored her first goal for us 15 minutes from time, before we went on to win our fourth Continental Cup later that season.
