HOW IT HAPPENED

A Vivianne Miedema hat-trick helped us extend our lead at the top of the Women’s Super League table on Sunday as we sealed a comfortable win against Reading.

Joe Montemurro opted for an attacking line-up, with three at the back and an abundance of quality on the wings - and his decision instantly paid off.

Beth Mead twisted and turned on the right flank before delivering a lofted cross into the path of Miedema, who found the back of the net with a looping header.

Less than five minutes later we’d doubled our advantage through Jordan Nobbs, who finished from close range following some intricate footwork by Miedema in the build-up.

Miedema then broke free down the left wing and fired wide from inside the box, before Nobbs failed to capitalise on a golden opportunity.

We continued to dominate possession though, and with less than a remaining of the first half, we made it three. Miedema sprayed the ball out to Mead on the left, who cut inside and found the bottom corner for her third goal of the season so far.

The Royals would have hoped to regroup following the break, but just four minutes into the second half Miedema grabbed her second of the afternoon - and her 20th in Arsenal colours since joining in May 2017.

Katie McCabe stormed down the left wing and delivered an inch-perfect cross in the path of the Netherlands international, who fizzed her first-time effort into the bottom corner.

Miedema and Nobbs then tried their luck from close range with Grace Moloney out of goal, but the visitors made two vital blocks to clear the danger.

However, our frontline wanted to secure their fifth consecutive WSL victory in style - and they went on to score twice more. Danielle van de Donk converted McCabe’s dragged effort from inside the six-yard box, before Miedema raced through on goal one last time and found the bottom left corner with a composed finish.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

We’ve extended our lead at the top of the WSL table. Manchester City remain a single point behind us, but we boast the advantage of having a game in hand.
