What did you gain from doing the Arsenal Gap Year?

I improved so much in terms of coaching, independence, confidence, teaching, languages and football. I gained classroom experience teaching in London, Indonesia and Kenya which certainly helped with my application for teacher training. I am sure that having the Arsenal Gap Year on my CV helped me get my role as PE Coordinator at work. It also gave me confidence and experience communicating with children who do not speak English, which has been useful in my job.

What was your favourite part of the programme?

The training in London was amazing. Playing football every day with your mates alongside getting coached by top quality Arsenal in the Community coaches was a brilliant start to the year. The opportunities to travel to Indonesia and Kenya allowed us to apply what we had learnt and test ourselves as coaches in a wide range of contexts. It was an honour to see first-hand the global appeal of Arsenal and the positive impact Arsenal in the Community are having.

How would you describe your overall experience on the Arsenal Gap Year?

An incredible experience. Not only has it been hugely beneficial professionally but it was also a really fun year. There can’t be many other courses which allow you to push yourself and develop in so many different areas. Also, getting to play at the Emirates was also a day I will always remember!

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of doing the Arsenal Gap Year?

Go for it. If you get chosen you will have an unforgettable year, make great friends, see incredible places and learn so much. Six years later I still meet up with friends I made during the year. Definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made!
