Spain international centre back Laia enjoyed an encouraging first season in England, despite some frustrating injuries, after joining from European champions Barcelona in the summer of 2023. Excellent both on the ball and at intercepting passes, the defender was a regular in our run to the Continental Cup final but also made valuable contributions in the WSL, notably starting the home wins over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, plus a fine 2-1 win at Manchester City in the penultimate game of the season.
She netted her first goal against Reading in the Continental Cup and might have finished the season with three, only for towering headers against Tottenham and Brighton to be classified as own goals. Laia made her debut for Barcelona in 2018 and won seven major honours including three league titles and two Champions Leagues either side of a loan spell at AC Milan in 2021/22.
The centre back made her international debut in 2022 and starred at her first major tournament by helping Spain win the World Cup in 2023 – she started every knockout game including the victory over England in the final. Laia was also instrumental as La Rojas won the inaugural UEFA Women’s Nations League in February 2024.
