A late goal from Layton Stewart condemned our under-21s to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Meadow Park on Monday night.
After narrowly losing to Chelsea last time out, Mehmet Ali’s side started brighter and almost went ahead when Matt Smith played in Amario Cozier-Duberry, but Marcelo Pitaluga somehow kept out the winger’s effort.
The next chance fell to Liverpool defender Billy Koumetio but he flashed his header over the bar before Cozier-Duberry went close again but his shot was saved by Pitaluga.
There would be no further clear-cut opportunities and we went into the break at a stalemate, with both teams cancelling each other out.
The visitors went down to 10 men early in the second half when Lee Jonas denied Mauro Bandeira a clear goalscoring opportunity.
With the extra man, we started to create more opportunities, Matt Smith went close but saw his sliding effort parried away and Charles Sagoe Jr had an effort blocked, after a great driving run from Myles Lewis-Skelly.
However, it would be the away side who would steal all three points when Stewart fired home his effort with just five minutes remaining
